History
The Elderton Command Shiraz has established an enviable reputation since the first vintage in 1984. It is truly one of Australia's best and most highly regarded Icon wines. Accolades have come from the world over for vintages such as the 1992, which was chosen by the influential wine critic Robert Parker in his U.S. magazine the 'Wine Advocate' as one of the world's top 80 wines. The 1995 Command was awarded 95 points by 'Wine Spectator' and placed in their top 100 wines, the 2000 was awarded 97 points by the same magazine and placed 27 in their top 100 and the 1996 Command won the trophy for the best Shiraz in the world at the London International Wine and Spirit Competition, which Elderton's principal - Lorraine Ashmead believes ratifies her plans, aspirations and expectations to produce a great wine of the world.
Winemaking
Use of open fermenters, with header down boards, for typically 5-6 days. Long-term maturation (almost 3 years, starting off in new American & new French oak puncheons and then transferred into older oak after about one year) and 12 months bottle age prior to release, make this quality wine complex and balanced with long term cellaring potential.
Viticulture
The Elderton Command Shiraz grapes are grown on a selected portion of the Elderton Estate vineyard, from vines planted in the early 1900's. Grown on rich river silt soils and red brown earth over limestone, in a Mediterranean climate, with cropping levels less than 4 tonnes per hectare. 2004 was a dream year viticulturally, with mild and dry, summer conditions continuing all the way through to early late autumn. The strength and magnificence of these vines shines effortlessly through in the quality of what is in the bottle .

Reviews
- Windsor Dobbin , Golf Magazine, August 2008 - 8 of the Best Barossa Wines. Elderton 2004 Command Shiraz A block-buster style of red that typifies the best of the Barossa. Made from fruit from a 104-year-old single vineyard, matured in new oak puncheons, this is dark, smoky and intense. Full-bodied and potentially long lived, it's a wine to put hair on your chest.
