Among the finest and most interesting wines in Australia are the Muscats produced in the Rutherglen area.
The world acclaimed Morris Liqueur Muscats are produced from a variety that we refer to as Brown Muscat (which is a clone of the Muscat aux Petit Grains Rouge - Muscat with small red berries) grown at our Rutherglen vineyards.
WINEMAKINGWhen the grapes are ripe, usually in the range of 16? to 18? baume, the grapes are then hand picked, crushed and then allowed to undergo a partial fermentation for 1-2 days before draining and pressing. The fermenting juice is then fortified to 18% v/v alcohol with a neutral, high strength grape spirit to arrest the fermentation. The fortified Muscat is then transferred into oak casks and barrels to slowly mature for many years.
In blending this wine, we used a range of different vintages, in order to provide lusciousness, richness, age and freshness.A 1991 vintage was used as the base to build this wine around; the youngest material was from 1995, to provide freshness to the bouquet, and the older vintages are used to provide lusciousness, intensity and richness. The oldest vintage used was a 1947. The average age of this wine is 14 years
Colour: Dark amber with an olive green tinge.
Bouquet: Concentrated raisin fruit with aged rancio characters.
PalateRaisin and dark chocolate flavours with richness, intensity and a long lingering finish.
Assessment
This Liqueur Muscat exhibits the aromatic fruit characters and luscious flavour of ripe Brown Muscat, resulting in an excellent dessert wine that will complement chocolate and fruit cake style desserts.
